Therefore, in addition to the mnemonic, our I-PASS Handoff Bundle included a multifaceted training program, changes to verbal handoffs, a handoff tool based on the electronic medical record to reinforce the mnemonic, and a faculty development and cultural change program.3,4 Collaborative cross-checking5 or the inclusion of questions by the receiving team that challenge the team handing off the patient regarding the treatment of the patient is a concept inherent in the final I-PASS mnemonic element of synthesis by receiver. We agree that this technique was an important part of the success of the I-PASS Handoff Bundle. Amy J. Starmer, M.D., M.P.H. Christopher P. Landrigan, M.D., M.P.H.

Methemoglobinemia is a life-threatening condition that can be difficult to diagnose. While methemoglobinemia can be congenital and should be considered in cyanotic infants,1 it is more often an adverse medication effect, most commonly related to dapsone use.2 As up to 1 in 9 emergency department visits in Canada might be owing to adverse medication effects, physicians and other health care prov...

Methemoglobinemia is a rare disorder of the blood in which there is an increase in the proportion of hemoglobin present in the oxidized form (methemoglobin). It may be inherited, due either to a deficiency of methemoglobin reductase or to a structural abnormality of hemoglobin, or it may be acquired, usually secondary to exposure to drugs or chemicals that oxidize hemoglobin Nearly 90 compounds...

www.turner-white.com M ethemoglobin, a unique form of hemoglobin (Hb) with diminished oxygen affinity, is formed and metabolized roughly at equivalent rates under normal physiologic conditions. However, when methemoglobin generation supersedes compensatory physiologic reductive capacity, methemoglobinemia may result. Potential etiologies of methemoglobinemia include a variety of heritable metab...

Increase of methemoglobin level is named as methemoglobinemia characterized by functional anemia and tissue hypoxia. When methylene blue is not available, alternative treatments such as ascorbic acid and hyperbari...
